Opening on March 18th, 2011, Orange! features a variety of creative expressions using this bright, energetic color - a needed reprieve after the long, hard New York Winter of 2010/2011. In their varied and artist ways, our artists interpret and celebrate the hues and ranges of this vibrant color.

About Orange:
The color Orange denotes energy, warmth, the sun and good health.

It is the color of our sunsets and the warmth of our winter fires.

It has a great affect on us both mentally, emotionally and physically – stimulating activity, whetting our appetite and encouraging socialization and interaction.

Shades of orange often indicate a transition or a bridge between two opposing factors. And it always demands attention and elicits a stronger “love it” or “hate it” response than other colors.

Other fascinating facts:

• The first recorded use of orange as a color name in English was in 1512 in the court of King Henry VIII
• Orange is the color of the Sacral Chakra, the second energy center also know as Svadhistana, and is associated with fertility and creativity
• Orange is the national color of The Netherlands (because the Royal Family owns the Principality of Orange)
• Native American Indians associate it with kinship
• Orange flowers including Iceland Poppies, Dahlia and Tiger Lillies create excitement and visually come forward in a garden and help make a large garden feel cozier
• In 2005, “The Gates” an environment art exhibit created by Christo and his wife Jean-Claude, debuted in Central Park containing 7,503 saffron colored panels. It was an incredible, engaging experience!

Meet our artists:

Kimber Berry
Kimber is an emerging artist based in Los Angeles, who is part of the "Flow Movement." Her artwork is vibrant and dynamic mixed media combining acrylics, resins and digitally altered photographs of her paint-strokes. As a native of LA, Kimber loves to blur the line between what is real and what is illusion.

She has received a lot of positive attention from art critics and curators on the West Coast and has been featured in solo and group shows with the Lowe Gallery in LA and Atlanta. She was recently featured in Art LTD magazine, and in late 2009 was highlighted in the Edenistic Divergence exhibit at the Riverside Museum in California.

Amy Cheng
Amy Cheng’s work is about the heart’s longing to be connected to the largeness of life and the timeless arc of the universe. In her fluid and evocative style, Amy merges Western painting with the Eastern sensibilities of her heritage. Born in Taiwan, raised in Brazil, and educated in the US, Amy has developed a painting vocabulary influenced by the interplay of divergent cultures – but with a fresh, contemporary view of our connectedness to the world.

The work of Amy Cheng has been widely exhibited throughout the US and internationally.

Mimi Chen Ting
Shanghai-born, Hong-Kong raised, Mimi Chen Ting came to the US to attend college and has been exhibiting her work since 1970. The varieties of cultural experiences continue to enhance her modernist expression. According to Mimi, “When I enter my studio, I am like an irrepressible child, capable of boundless possibilities. Whether I am painting, drawing or making prints, the processes are constant. I lay down my lines and colors and coax them to percolate and distill until they dance and sing beyond the physical, uncover new depths and insights I do not consciously seek and always, carry me further than I imagine.”

Her work has been featured in solo and group exhibitions in museums and galleries throughout the US and abroad including the Albuquerque Museum (NM), San Jose Museum of Art (CA), Harwood Museum (NM), Colorado Museum of Contemporary Art (CO) and the American Embassy in Malaysia.

Marie Danielle Leblanc
Canadian artist, Marie Danielle Leblanc's paintings transform landscapes into poetic worlds. Her deeply saturated palettes bring new life to the sea, land and sky. And she transports her viewers to timeless and imaginary landscapes. She has participated in twenty solo exhibitions, and more than fifty group exhibitions. Her work has been shown throughout Canada and in Paris, Sydney, Mexico and Tokyo.

James Minden
James Minden was born in Portland, Oregon. He has exhibited his highly textured and rich acrylic paintings, drawings and prints professionally since 1978. He lived, worked and exhibited in New York City in the 1980’s and returned to Portland in 1991. His artwork is in many private and corporate collections.

Vanessa Ryan
Vanessa Ryan is a mid-career, California based artist. Vanessa's work is concerned about nature - from the serene to the cataclysmic. Through her colors, patterns, and textures, she strives to capture its vastness. Her color palette in particular is drawn from her California and Southwest surroundings. She has been exhibiting her work throughout the US and Japan since 1980.

Suzan Woodruff
Suzan Woodruff is a co-leader of the LA “Flow Movement”. Her work evokes a vast spectrum of visual sensations and visceral emotions that only deepens with prolonged viewing. According to Suzan, "I meditate and envision each panel. I choose my colors, do some small pieces and then dive into the unconscious--my creative space where natural occurrences and control come together to form a final destination." This destination culminates with a creation that can be either serenely ethereal or fluidly volcanic or, odd as it sounds, both at once.

She has had solo exhibitions in New York, Miami, Phoenix, S.F, New Delhi, Budapest and been included in dozens of group exhibitions around the world. Her work has been collected in museums, corporate and private collections including the House of Saud (the Royal Family of Saudi Arabia), actors Will and Jada Pinkett Smith, entrepreneur Todd Wagner.

Wayne Zebzda
Wayne Zebzda is a trans-Pacific transplant and mid-career artist, currently living in Kauai, Hawaii. His art ranging from drawing to sculpture, video, photography and installations focuses on key themes including social commentary, as well as environmental or ecological issues. The conceptual play is his work often communicates serious or difficult ideas, and delights in a deep sense of humor in the face of the absurdities of life.

Wayne is committed to making art accessible to a wide audience, and has been involved in numerous Art in Public Places projects and commissions for the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture in the Arts. His work has been exhibit and collected throughout the US.
